A Field Guide to Lighter Types: From Trench Art to Torch Flames
Lighters are easy to take for granted — a flick of the thumb and you have fire. But behind that simplicity lies more than a century of mechanical ingenuity, wartime improvisation, and industrial design. The variety of lighter mechanisms that have been produced, both commercially and by hand, is remarkable. Here's a guide to the major types, how they work, and where they fit in history and collecting.
Flip Top (Hinged Lid)
The flip top is the dominant lighter form of the twentieth century, and for good reason — it works. The case has a hinged lid that flips open to expose the wick and windscreen. Opening the lid is typically integrated with the lighting action: on a Zippo, the lid pops open and the flint wheel is struck in a single practiced motion. The open lid acts as a windshield baffle, protecting the flame on three sides.
Zippo perfected this design and made it iconic, but they didn't invent it. European manufacturers like Imco (Austria) and Thorens (Switzerland) produced hinged-lid lighters in the 1920s and 1930s. What Zippo contributed was a particularly robust, repairable construction and an unconditional guarantee that created brand loyalty unlike anything else in the lighter market.
Flip tops can run on naphtha (lighter fluid) or, in more modern versions, butane. The windscreen design makes naphtha-fueled flip tops genuinely functional in outdoor conditions where piezoelectric jet lighters fail.
For collectors, the flip top category is vast. Variations in hinge style, lid shape, case thickness, finish, insert mechanism, and imprint make it a lifetime pursuit on its own.
Squeeze (Side-Press / Pinch)
Squeeze lighters use lateral pressure — squeezing the sides of the case or pressing a side-mounted lever — to simultaneously open wick cover and produce a spark. Release the pressure and the flame is snuffed out. There's no separate ignition step; the squeeze does everything at once.
The definitive American squeeze lighter is the Regens, produced from the 1930s through the 1950s. Regens lighters have a distinctly utilitarian look — usually a simple rectangular case — and the squeeze mechanism is the whole design logic. You pinch, it lights; you release, it goes out. Other American and European manufacturers produced similar designs under their own names, including Corona, Dubsky, and Solo, which share the same basic operating principle and are often found alongside Regens examples in collections.
The advantage of the squeeze mechanism is that it's fast and requires no conscious extinguishing step — releasing your grip does the job automatically. The disadvantage is calibration sensitivity. A spring that's too stiff makes the lighter exhausting to use; too loose and ignition becomes unreliable. Finding squeeze lighters in good working order requires either luck or restoration work, as the valve and spring assemblies are prone to gumming up from old fuel residue.
Squeeze lighters occupy an interesting niche in the collecting world. They never achieved the cultural dominance of the flip-top, but they have a dedicated following drawn to the mechanical directness of the design — one motion, one result.
Lift Arm
Lift arm lighters operate by raising a hinged arm on top of the case. The motion of lifting the arm draws the flint across the wheel (or in some versions, a cam strikes the flint as the arm rises), and the wick ignites. Lower the arm to extinguish.
This mechanism was produced by several manufacturers in the 1920s through 1940s, and it gives the lighter a distinctly mechanical, almost industrial character. The arm is usually substantial — not a delicate piece — and the action has a solid, deliberate quality.
Lift arm lighters are among the more unusual pocket lighter designs from a motion standpoint. Most lighter mechanisms are thumb-operated with a small stroke; the lift arm requires a broader, more intentional gesture. This makes them interesting objects to handle but perhaps less practical for quick everyday use.
Collecting-wise, lift arm lighters span a range from crude utilitarian pieces to finely machined examples with beautiful cases. The mechanism itself is straightforward to understand once you have one in hand.
Aluminum Block (Solid Body)
Aluminum block lighters, sometimes called solid or semi-solid body lighters, are machined or cast from a single block or near-solid piece of aluminum (or occasionally brass or other alloys). Rather than a thin stamped-metal case with an internal insert, the lighter body itself is the fuel reservoir, with channels machined directly into the material.
These lighters have a weight and solidity that stamped-metal lighters simply cannot replicate. They feel like a tool, not a consumer product. The visual aesthetic tends toward the industrial or military, with machined surfaces, exposed hardware, and minimal ornamentation.
Several manufacturers — particularly in Europe and Japan — have produced aluminum block designs. Vintage aluminum block lighters can be found from the mid-twentieth century onward, with some wartime pieces improvised from whatever materials were available.
From a collector's perspective, solid-body lighters often show their machining origins in interesting ways: tool marks, subtle asymmetries, and construction details that reveal exactly how the piece was made.
Trench Lighters
Trench lighters aren't a single mechanism — they're a category defined by their origins. During World War I, soldiers in the trenches improvised lighters from whatever materials they had: spent cartridge casings, artillery shells, wire, and scrounged metal. The result was a form of folk engineering that produced an enormous variety of one-of-a-kind objects, each reflecting the maker's ingenuity and available materials.
The most common form uses a rifle or pistol cartridge casing as the lighter body. The primer pocket is bored out to hold a wick. A wheel-and-flint mechanism is fitted, often cannibalized from a commercial lighter or jury-rigged from wire and a piece of file. A hinged cap, sometimes made from a second cartridge or a pressed metal disk, keeps the wick protected when not in use.
What makes trench lighters compelling objects is their hand-made nature. No two are exactly alike. The quality ranges from crude field lashups to remarkably refined pieces, some decorated with engraving or wire-wrap, evidently made by men with time and skilled hands.
Authentication is a real challenge in this category. Genuine WWI trench lighters command significant collector interest, and the category has attracted reproductions and fakes for decades. Key tells of authentic pieces include period-correct cartridge headstamps, appropriate patina, construction methods consistent with field improvisation, and provenance where available. Modern reproductions, even well-intentioned ones, often have a machine precision that genuine trench art lacks.
WWII and later conflict lighters exist in a similar tradition — servicemen have always found ways to make fire — but "trench lighter" as a collecting category tends to center on WWI pieces.
Petrol Wick Lighters (Non-Flip)
Before the Zippo standardized the flip-top form, a wide variety of petrol (naphtha) wick lighters existed with different case geometries and opening mechanisms. These include:
Lift-lid lighters, where the cap simply lifts straight off rather than hinging — an early and very simple design requiring two hands.
Screw-cap lighters, where a threaded cap is removed to expose the wick. Slow and impractical for everyday use but simple to manufacture.
Pocket lighters with sliding covers, where a sleeve slides down the body to expose the wick and often simultaneously produces a spark.
Many of these pre-war designs are elegant objects in ways that post-war mass production moved away from. They were often made in sterling silver, gold-filled, or engine-turned metal, intended as accessories as much as tools.
Table Lighters
Table lighters — designed to sit on a desk or side table rather than be carried in a pocket — are their own substantial collecting category. They range from simple upscaled versions of pocket lighter mechanisms to elaborate decorative objects with no resemblance to a functional tool.
Common table lighter mechanisms include:
Touch-tip lighters, where a small button or lever produces a momentary flame intended to be touched to a cigarette rather than held burning.
Wick-and-wheel mechanisms in large decorative cases — essentially a pocket lighter blown up to table scale, sometimes with a counterweighted lid that opens dramatically when the lighter is lifted from its base.
Dupont and Cartier lighters, which represent the apex of table lighter craftsmanship — machined brass, lacquered in deep colors or plated in precious metal, with mechanisms engineered to a watchmaker's standard.
Ronson, Dunhill, Evans, Thorens, Colibri, and Regens all produced notable table lighters. The form was at its commercial peak from roughly 1930 to 1965, corresponding with the height of cigarette smoking's social acceptability and the associated gift market for accessories.
Butane Jet / Torch Lighters
Butane jet lighters, including the modern torch or "cigar lighter" style, represent the dominant technology from the late twentieth century onward. A piezoelectric crystal produces a spark when struck by a small hammer mechanism (triggered by a button), igniting a pressurized butane stream.
The key variants:
Soft flame butane — a conventional butane flame with a piezo igniter, mimicking the look of a petrol lighter but using pressurized gas. Most disposable lighters (Bic, etc.) fall here.
Torch / jet flame — a focused, wind-resistant flame produced by forcing butane through a nozzle under pressure. Used for cigars, culinary torches, and technical applications. The flame burns hotter and straighter than a soft flame.
Triple and quad torch — multiple jets in a single lighter, primarily for cigars, producing an even, wide burn across the foot of a large ring gauge cigar.
From a collecting standpoint, butane lighters have been made in every price range from disposable commodity to engineered luxury. Colibri, Xikar, Prometheus, and S.T. Dupont all make or have made high-end butane lighters with significant collector followings. Early piezoelectric lighters from the 1950s and 1960s are also increasingly of collector interest as the mechanism itself becomes historical.
Catalytic / Platinum Lighters
An unusual category: catalytic lighters use a platinum catalytic element rather than a flame. Fuel (naphtha) vapor contacts a platinum coil, which catalyzes oxidation and glows cherry red — hot enough to light a cigarette but producing no visible flame. They are essentially flameless.
The Ronson Varaflame and various pocket "heater" lighters from the 1950s and 1960s used this principle. They're quiet, windproof, and produce no flame that could be seen in low-light conditions — making them particularly popular with military users.
The mechanism is sensitive. The platinum coil degrades over time and with exposure to contaminants in the fuel. Finding a catalytic lighter in working condition is genuinely challenging, and restoration requires sourcing correct platinum elements, which are rare.
Flint-and-Steel Strikers
Technically not a lighter in the modern sense but a direct ancestor: flint-and-steel strikers are exactly what they sound like. A hardened steel striker is drawn across a piece of flint or pyrite to produce sparks, which are caught in tinder (charcloth, amadou, or similar) and blown into an ember.
Pocket versions were common in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, before friction matches became widely available. They look like small, handled steel tools — sometimes quite elegantly made — and were carried alongside a small tin of prepared tinder.
For collectors, flint-and-steel strikers represent the direct pre-history of the lighter. They're not lighters by modern definition, but understanding them contextualizes why the early petrol lighter was such a radical improvement: it was self-contained, reliable, and fast.
Windproof / Storm Lighters
A category defined by function rather than mechanism: windproof or storm lighters are designed to maintain a flame in harsh conditions. Zippo's naphtha wick design is the archetype, but the category also includes:
Peanut lighters and capsule lighters — tiny waterproof containers with a wick, designed for survival kits. The flame is small but will light in almost any condition.
Stormproof butane designs — lighters with specially engineered burner heads that redirect the flame inward or use a hot-wire glowing element instead of a conventional flame, remaining functional in high wind.
Military surplus shops and outdoor retailers have long carried windproof lighters, and the category overlaps significantly with survival and bushcraft gear.
Collecting Across Types
Many lighter collectors begin with a single type — Zippos being the most common entry point — and gradually find themselves drawn to adjacent categories. The mechanical variety across lighter types is genuinely impressive, spanning more than a century of engineering solutions to the same fundamental problem: reliable, portable fire.
Condition, originality, provenance, and rarity drive value across all categories. A mechanically complete example in good cosmetic condition will always be worth more than a parts piece, and original finishes are almost always preferable to restoration. Documentation and original packaging add value in every category.
The broader collecting community is well-documented online, with specialized forums, price guides, and reference books covering most major manufacturers and types. For anyone starting out, handling as many examples as possible — at antique shows, estate sales, and collector meets — builds the tactile knowledge that no reference book can fully substitute for.
